Karyn McCallum

Digital Designer

Karyn (She/Her) is a theatre artist working in the areas of set, costume and projection design. Her practice varies dramatically depending on the objective of each collaboration and has ranged from devised, design driven works to creating historical environments through sets and costumes for the stage. Her works have included site specific as well as site adaptive design, working with the character of found space.

Projected and moving images have always been a part of Karyn’s design practice, the range of tools having started with overhead projectors, shadows and slide carousels. Her work has grown with the development of digital media and continues to slide between analogue and highly digital environments; sometimes working with the way performers interact with light and at other times telling story through movement and colour through costume. Karyn has worked in professional theatre as a designer and scenic artist throughout Canada as well as in England.

She now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she is an Assistant Professor at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University, teaching set, costume and projection design.
